During the time we spent together, I discovered a plethora of information about myself and my skills and abilities. Having to spend time thinking about my life's achievements then assessing the skills learned from these experiences, was in-it-of- itself one of the most invaluable lessons I have ever learned. I jokingly refer to it as my "professional excavation." Making a career change in mid life has proven much more difficult than I had envisioned. Your help, sensible advice, and wonderful sense of humour kept me from giving up.

I came to Chandler Hill Partners believing it to be an employment agency. I soon discovered that it is so much more than that. It is in fact a cleverly disguised vehicle for deep change -both at a professional and personal level. This experience has also served to enhance my education. Good recommendations for professional e-mail addresses

When a candidate sends me his or her resume the first thing I see is the e-mail address, that’s my first impression of the job seeker.

As a career professional and employer, I can tell you straight away that I have difficulty seriously considering candidates when I see e-mail addresses that demonstrate poor taste or a lack of professionalism.

Job seekers, more than anyone, need an e-mail address that is clear, easy to read, that identifies you individually and as a professional. You may think it wise to disguise your online identity, but doing so in your e-mail address is like sending a letter and signing it “Mickey Mouse”. Keep it straight, not cutsy and as honest as possible.

Using just your first name (i.e... Dave@sample.com) is too personal. A combination of first and last name or initials is best, DaveParker@sample.com, Dparker@sample.com or even Dparker99@sample.com are simple, identify you personally and are representative of the kind of e-mail address you would be issued in a professional work environment.

When considering the right combination for your e-mail address, do not use your birthday or anything that indicates a year. It will automatically be assumed to be your birth year or age and could bias an employer.

If you have to use numbers, a zip code is a good place to start, it will be repeated on your resume and is appropriate, or choose numbers that could not possibly represent age. Stay away from combinations of o’s and zeros, strung together they can alter the appearance of your message and be confusing. For example, BAbalo00@sample.com looks a little like babalooo.

If you are using a free e-mail service such as Yahoo, or Hotmail, it may be difficult to get an e-mail address that fits the recommended format because of the numbers of people signing up for these services every day.

Just get as close as you can to the real thing. Be sure to read your combination before you submit it and make sure it does not say something that will embarrass you later by spelling something you did not intend.

Also, if you are using a popular free e-mail service, keep in mind that everyone recognizes Yahoo and Hotmail as “free” – this also makes a statement about you. Other less well known services such as Execs2k.com or Mail.com may give a more professional impression.

Whatever you choose, it is a very good idea to have a separate account just for your job search efforts. This way, when you sit down to examine and respond to your time critical employment opportunities, your focus won’t be challenged by e-mails from friends and family.

A successful job search takes a complete strategy; what may seem to be a minor detail now could have a major impact later. Remember, you only get one chance to make a good first impression.

Fewer Small Businesses Plan to Hire

Small businesses, the engine of U.S. job creation, are retreating on hiring plans - magnifying the jobless recovery.

The share planning to hire fell to 13% last month in a survey of 567 small firms out Friday. That was down from 17% in January, the National Federation of Independent Business trade group said.

Even the weak hiring plans may be too rosy. For most of the past year, small firms failed to add employees despite earlier plans, NFIB data show.

The trend is significant because small companies create most jobs. The USA's 5.8 million small employers have nearly half of all workers. Their reluctance to boost employment partly explains dismal payroll figures released Friday by the Labor Department. Non-farm business payrolls grew by just 21,000 jobs in February - well below the 125,000 that economists had expected. The 5.6% jobless rate was unchanged.

High School Drop Outs Get Help

Finding a future in today's job market can be tough for anyone, but a high school drop out hardly stands a chance.

One company is teaming up with other businesses to make a difference in the staggering statistics of those who have not completed a high school educational program and who represent the largest proportion of the unemployed.

To help raise the standard of living for drop outs who will on average earn less than $20 thousand per year, Chandler Hill Partners, a career advancement and job search firm, announced today the launch of a national project designed to help high school drop outs find a future.

Chandler Hill Partners will offer a free workshop designed to increase the opportunity for a drop out to obtain a job, improve his/her interviewing skills, and negotiate a better position in the workplace. Chandler Hill Partners will conduct this workshop in its regional offices throughout the country.

"Our Find Your Future project is intended to reach those in our communities who may be the most lost and struggling of the job seekers today," Sarah Hightower Hill, chief executive officer of Chandler Hill said. "We believe if we help them find their value, move them toward a career path and partner with other businesses that may give them an opportunity-we can eventually lead them to seek higher education and prepare themselves for the job market."

"We know the solution to reducing the high school drop out rates will take the talents and ideas of many people," Marla Morales, chief operating officer for Chandler Hill said. "Our area of expertise is not only getting people on a career track but helping them realize their unique value in the workplace; if we can get those who have already dropped out going in the right direction, we can be a small part of a big future for many."

Body Language Can Make or Break Interviews

What you are saying in a job interview may not be coming out of your mouth. Experts agree that non-verbal elements such as appearance, posture and eye contact can account for 60 percent of what you're communicating in a job interview.

"Confidence is probably the number one factor that employers are looking for in an interviewee," said Hugh Priddy, senior campaign manager for Chandler Hill Partners, a career advancement and job search firm. "Most people are communicating their confidence more by their body clues than by what they are saying."

Chandler Hill Partners professional career consultants suggest that jobseekers always present a professional image while interviewing regardless of the nature of the interview. "Unless you are told not to dress formally-a business suit shows your respect for the person to whom you are speaking," said Priddy.

A firm handshake and looking the interviewer in the eye are only the first step in the communication of confidence. An interviewee must be aware of what he or she is doing and be able to listen clearly to the questions being asked. Chandler Hill Partners suggests that jobseekers practice responding to interview questions in front of a mirror or conduct mock interviews in front of a video camera.

"Preparation is the key to winning interviews," said Priddy. "You must be aware of what you are saying, what you are doing and what the person in front of you is asking."

Surviving Job Loss

If you have lost your job for any reason, but particularly if it was under negative circumstances, get ready to go through a range of emotions; you are experiencing one of the most traumatic events that may happen in your lifetime. Job loss ranks right up there with divorce, death, and going to jail as among the most stressful events that can happen to a person.

Our clients tell us that in the first few days following their termination they often felt confused, as if they were in dark tunnel. They relived the events of their termination over and over, wanted to sleep away the time, did not eat, had difficulty in concentrating. Of course the importance of your job plays a large role – we are speaking here to the loss of a career position, one on which you and your family depended to maintain your lifestyle.

It is important that you understand the impact of this loss on your physical and emotional health. Many grief counselors would agree that job loss takes the person through the same phases as the death of a loved one. You might find yourself in shock and denial at first and then experience panic when the reality of the situation settles in. It is not unusual to go through an anger period and certainly an element of depression.

Each of us is equipped to handle these situations differently, but however you choose to cope with your job loss, it is clear that action is the number one way to overcome your fear, drive your panic away and eventually solve the problem.

This, like any other situation, requires a plan, a strategy, some tactics, and then the implementation of the plan. Our clients tell us that having a place to go regularly, experts or trusted confidants with whom to share the stress, and knowing that there are others supporting their efforts was the most helpful part of getting through their job loss.

While you are in the process, diet, exercise and mental stimulation can make a big difference in how your body deals with the stress. It probably isn’t a good idea to reinvent your life, but it certainly is a good idea to consider yourself and your physical, emotional, and mental well being as part of your job search strategy. Love in the Workplace – What Do We Do?

First before you even think about getting involved with someone in your workplace, consider some small historical facts such as the little workplace flirtation that ended up getting a President of the United States impeached – Causing a king to abdicate his throne and, not to mention a few major empires that were toppled in the name of love. Getting involved with a co-worker, or an employee can have serious implications – do not enter into this relationship lightly. (*note: adulterous affairs and repeated casual flirtations are not included in this discussion)

We live in a time of hurry and in many ways, isolation; getting on a train, driving into work, hustling among the crowded sidewalks, all in essence, pretty much alone, morning after morning. Americans are hard workers, putting in many more hours in the average workweek than some other cultures – so it’s late, you repeat the journey leaving work, but the crowds have thinned and you arrive home to your routine. If you are single it is generally alone. We are marrying later in life so there goes the chances of meeting and marrying while in high school or college, and so goes the daily routine for many of us, leaving the people we meet in the ordinary course of our work as the prime targets of our attraction – not unusual then if you are making eyes at someone in the next cube or office. In an Internet survey of 966 participants, 59 percent had had a workplace romance. Now having said that, chances are if you are engaged in workplace relationship logic is not the guiding principle that got you involved in the first place. So lets start there – you are in love and you have been sneaking around seeing each other trying to keep it a secret from other co-workers, and perhaps superiors. What are you going to do, what should you do?

Find out if your company has a policy on such relationships and then find out exactly what that policy states. Many organizations may feel that the personal relationships of their employees are simply none of the company business – others may take a harder approach. But both will readily agree that workplace relationships can have far-reaching and negative implications, and can be costly. Most employers also know that men and women – all people, will get together – it is inevitable, and entirely predictable..

According to Paul C. Buchanan, Chair of Stoel Rives LLP Labor & Employment Group, “By some counts, 50 percent of sexual-harassment lawsuits arise out of workplace relationships that started out as consensual. And workplace romances can lead to other legal complications as well, including perceptions of favoritism (that later become discrimination lawsuits) and conflicts of interest.” More of the down side; consider the consequences if one of the partners in the relationship is a supervisor to the other; co-workers may feel threatened once the relationship is known, causing dissention and a loss of productivity. Certainly a security compromise can happen regarding the type and level of access to information by the partners, this would naturally be of significant concern to the company. And none of this takes into consideration the disruption caused by speculation and gossip by staff members, and the demands of the relationship itself on the two partners just to find those “stolen moments”.

So, if you find yourself engaged in such a relationship –Work within the framework of your company policy – if there is a strict rule, request formally that you be allowed to comply with the rule through department transfer or other consideration. In all cases be open and honest with your employer. Once you have made clear that there are no issues with your employer then address your co-workers.

Let them know in a tasteful way – such as inviting them to happy hour or some other setting outside the workplace, let them see you together, and tell them simply, “We have been seeing each other outside of work and we would like you to learn this from us.” You owe them nothing more than this courtesy, hopefully it will put all speculation to rest and be done with it.

Then mind your manners and sense of propriety at work at all times, in all circumstances. No groping, no stolen kisses, no hand holding, absolutely no playing footsie, passing notes, or emails. No sexual innuendo in any way, neither verbal, by gesture or by look.

Remember, you are in the workplace to solve a problem for your employer, not to enhance your social life. Be professional and respectful of your company’s mission, reputation, and productivity.

Before I begin, I must apologize to you for not writing this e-mail to you sooner. Due to the increased scare of actually sending regular mail these days, I thought this method would be more appropriate.

You know I think the world of you. We have only known each other since the end of May and since then, you have become an integral part of my "Board of Directors". These people are ones that I can truly confide in and know that they have my best interests in mind at all times.

You and I connected from the beginning. must have known we would so my hat is off to her as well. I know you will only say that you were doing your job but in my humble opinion, you went far beyond that. We had so many similar experiences that it was as if we knew each other for many years not just a couple of months.
You were my sounding board in times of severe uncertainty in my business life. You helped me refocus my priorities and put them on paper in such a way that even I was in awe. My resume' turned out to be a work of art if I may say so. You were patient with me during those difficult personal times when my self esteem was dreadfully low. Thank you for your insights, words of encouragement, and superior knowledge of the Chandler Hill method for career advancement. Back in August when I first stepped in the door at Chandler Hill, I did not believe I had a chance at finding a position again in the electronics industry. The first thing J.N. assured me was that I am not too old. The rest is history, since I now have a consulting contract with University and a good chance at getting a proposal funded with University in Daytona Beach. The two techniques that worked very effectively for me were the rapid success of a network and an initial referral letter. My first referral letter was initiated based on a suggestion of a one time business contact of my wife. That obtuse contact referred me to the right person to contact at University. I do not call this luck for good reason, you stressed in our meetings that any contact can be a good one. That it happened with the first referral letter could be luck, but I think it is the approach that makes these convenient opportunities. I feel the whole Chandler Hill experience was good for me. The personality assessment confirmed my strong points and the areas I must control in order to continue having achievements in the workforce. Now that I have FINALLY landed a job that I am excited about and feel is worth my time and effort, I want to thank you for all your help in getting to this point. As you know, the field of education in this state is rather lacking in terms of appropriate compensation for teachers. I was determined to find a position that would not force me to "go backwards" in terms of salary or responsibility in comparison to where I was in Oregon. If this was impossible, I was prepared to pursue something in a related field that would still utilize my strengths and skills. Your Chandler Hill approach helped me to see that I really do have some good/functional skills. The development of my own "marketing brochure" to present and "defend" my career objectives was a big hit at every interview. The thought involved in creating it showed potential employers that I was a person who "goes the extra mile" with energy and creativity. Learning how to go about the interview process was another huge help to me. The use of the "informational interview" technique connected me to people within each organization that I was researching which built quite a nice networking system leading to my current position. Also, I am a person who has always believed in writing thank you letters and your reinforcement of that value helped me to make sure I had "everyone covered" in terms of these network contacts.

I think I have a better understanding of my own profile, and will use the information to try to better understand my co-workers "preferences" and "communication styles".
